Retiring in Chile: pension or regular income?

Understand Chile’s retirement and rentista residence routes without relying on borrowed income thresholds.

Two kinds of financial evidence

Chile’s temporary-residence category for retirees and rentistas addresses applicants who can support themselves through a retirement pension or recurring income from real estate or financial assets. The evidence needs to demonstrate the nature and adequacy of those resources.

A pension-based application

A retiree should review the official pension documentation requirements and how to demonstrate the pension payments available to support life in Chile. The records should connect the entitlement to the payments actually received.

A rentista application

Recurring income from real estate or financial assets needs evidence of its source, regularity, and sufficiency. Employment wages and freelance earnings should not be assumed to qualify under this category. A bank balance alone should not be treated as interchangeable with documented recurring income.

Use Chile’s standard

Do not import fixed income thresholds from Ecuador or another country. Chile’s official category guidance should determine the evidence to prepare. The circumstances of accompanying family members also matter.

Prepare the household file

Consider the main applicant’s income evidence, the relationship documents for dependents, and the separate documents each applicant needs. Check the application location rule before moving.
